Large-format (also known as Wide-format) printers have the capability to print on various substrates including coroplast, vinyl, foamcore, PVC (and many more!) with a width between 17″ and 100″.

Printers with a print width of over 100″ are generally referred to Super-Wide or Grand format. Using rolled substrates (or non-rigid substrates) as opposed to individual sheets, wide format provides the capability of producing very large scale banners and promotional materials.

Tips for Large-Format Designs and Printing :

The experts at Velocity Print came up with 10 tips to ensuring your large print campaigns go off without a hitch.

First Glance

4 seconds is the average amount of time spent on a first glance. Focus on your core message and keep your copy short.

Font Sizes

Use this formula to calculate appropriate font sizes.

Viewing distance (in feet) x 0.034 = Height of text (in inches)

Height of text (in inches) x 72 = Point size of text

Keep your graphics simple with good use of negative space to allow for legibility of the message.

When, How, Where, & By Whom

Know the environment your graphic will be used and the consumer experience you are trying to achieve.

Building Your Files

Large graphics files can be built at 50% actual size to manage file size.

Vehicle Graphics

Don’t design with information overload. Less is more, especially on moving vehicles.

Image Resolution

Depends on viewing distance. Ask our experts to help determine proper resolution before you begin your design.

Always provide us with a low-res PDF proof of your artwork when you submit files.

Vectors & Text

Shapes and texts should be created and output as vectors, which are scalable to any size.

Choose the right substrate based on expected lifespan, durability, use and environment.
